Sport at MAGS

Sport is a defining feature of our school identity and a powerful vehicle for student development, connection and pride. Our school is a large, diverse secondary school with a strong sporting tradition and a broad range of codes offered across summer and winter seasons. Sport plays an important role in school culture, student engagement and community connection.

The school caters for:

  • High participation sport
  • Aspirational performance pathways
  • Established premier and national-level programmes

The challenge is to balance breadth and excellence while ensuring sustainable systems and consistent expectations.

Mount Albert Grammar School (MAGS) boasts a strong history of athletic success, with teams achieving national and provincial championships in various sporting codes. MAGS has also produced numerous individual athletes who have represented New Zealand internationally.
However, more important than medals is the value we place on sport to help develop character and a lifelong interest in health and fitness among our students. All students are encouraged to participate in at least one sport each year and consequently we offer more than 50 sports which can be played from social to Premier level.

SPORT STRATEGY OBJECTIVES

MAGS has two Directors of Sport: Mrs Judy Revell and Ms TeAroha Keenan.

As Directors who oversee all sport, our combined focus is on Leadership and Governance of Sport at MAGS to deliver quality sporting opportunities to benefit our students’ wellbeing through participation, engagement and enjoyment.
We work with Directors of each code, sports coordinators, finance and team coaches. We are keen to see the enjoyment of students in our sports programme.

JUDY REVELL
DIRECTOR OF SPORTS
ADMINISTRATION & FACILITIES

Judy has held Director of Sport roles across three Auckland secondary schools, bringing strong administrative expertise within the school sport environment.
She has a background in Athletics (Track and Field), sits on the Athletics Auckland Board, and helps manage the Auckland team competing at the NZ Track and Field Championships.
Judy also serves as the Auckland/Central regional delegate for the New Zealand Secondary School Athletics Association, supporting both international touring teams and regional programmes, including Classics Tour teams and the Auckland team for the North Island Secondary Schools Championships.

TEAROHA KEENAN
DIRECTOR OF SPORTS
with ACADEMIES

TeAroha returns to Mount Albert Grammar School, where she previously spent 13 years as Deputy Principal and Director of Girls, helping shape a strong culture of success in girls’ sport and cultural programmes.
While netball has been central to her journey, her background also includes athletics, basketball and swimming. MAGS remains close to her, with all three of her children representing the school and Auckland at a representative level.
Beyond school sport, TeAroha has contributed to netball through leadership and development roles, including local executive positions and supporting Aotearoa Māori and Pasifika initiatives both nationally and internationally.
