Ten Year 13 pupils represented MAGS at the 13th Annual Secondary Schools’ Peace Symposium at Western Springs Garden Community Hall on Friday.
Run by the Peace Foundation, the event was attended by students from high schools throughout the Auckland region.
The theme for the symposium, and for the many activities that MAGS highlighted in our Peace Week, was ‘NZ 30 Years Nuclear-Free’.
The programme included guest speakers such as Auckland Councillor Cathy Casey, members of the Peace Foundation, and George Sabonadiere, a Year 12 student from Dunedin’s Logan Park High School, who spoke about ‘Uranium on their Breath: Why nuclear weapons threaten us all, and what young Kiwis can do to get rid of them’.
There were also presentations from the students, and they got into groups and composed through song, dance and drums “a powerful message for peace”.
The day’s activities concluded with a closing waiata “Nuclear-Free NZ” led by Mt Roskill Grammar School and the song “Imagine”, led by Jasper Hawkins and Jarni Blair, who played their inspirational music throughout the day and had everyone dancing and having fun.
