Night of the Classics 2022

MAGS has a 20-year-long tradition of staging classical music concerts at the end of Term 2.
Once again, Night of the Classics on July 8 presented a great opportunity for our musicians both to be assessed and to be prepared for the upcoming KBB festival, Big Sing finals and Auckland Blues and Jazz Festival.
Our Concert Orchestra opened and closed the concert with medleys of popular Abba songs and Latin tunes. The Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Dr John Thomson, played the set of pieces that they will perform at the KBB Festival in early August. Bella Houghton was the featured soloist on violin.
The Chamber/String Orchestra have also performed Vivaldi’s Winter, as well as the Japanese Four Seasons. The featured soloist was Helen Wen on violin.
Our two chamber groups, Torschlusspanik and Moon Stars, also performed their NZCT competition pieces.
Both choirs – Gloriana and The Centennial Choir – performed two of their Big Sing pieces each, led by their choral directors, Mrs Oxenham and Mr Maskell respectively.
Our Jazz Band musicians played two pieces under the leadership of Mr Watson, with Kaloni Tovo and Manas Chigurukota the featured vocalists.
HOD Music Milica Moon said, “The audience enjoyed the lovely finish to the busy term, and all the performances were welcomed with huge applause.”
