Sports leader and athletes honoured at awards

MAGS’ departing Director of Sport, Mr David Long, was honoured with a long service award at the College Sport Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards, held at Eden Park on Thursday, 23 November.

Mr Long has been a coach, team manager and sports director for more than 30 years, and Director of Sport at MAGS for since 2010. A former New Zealand representative in hurdles, he has specialised in Athletics and Hockey.

Two MAGS students won their categories as the best in Auckland at their respective sports – Brock Evans in Softball (below left) and Javvier Pitovao in Rugby League. Brock was selected for the NZ Emerging Sox Under 17 squad this year, and Javvier for the NZSS Rugby League and NZ Under 18 teams.

There were six other MAGS finalists: Taylor Chongnee for Softball, Harley Maynard for Softball, Riana Rangi for Basketball, Lahaina-Lee Upu-Toparea for Netball, Paige Witehira for Athletics and Antonio Wulf for Touch.
