MAGS Football has launched a coaching programme with local Intermediate schools, starting with Blockhouse Bay Intermediate.
Once a fortnight MAGS’ Director of Football Mr Peter Smith takes some First XI players to the school for a session with their young players, and every few weeks the Intermediate visits MAGS.
A recent session saw Blockhouse Bay ‘old girl’ Grace Jale give some pointers to a girls’ team, while First XI boys Owen Matipo, William Napa, Clint Barbaso and Jordan Lamb helped the boys.
Mr Smith said the initiative started after he was contacted by Blockhouse Bay teachers and coaches Mr Ryan Carney and Mr Dan Willemsen, who he knew from football circles. “We hope to expand the programme to other local Intermediates, as a way of getting involved in our community and giving back to the schools that nurtured our players,” said Mr Smith.
