Basketball Juniors do down fighting

A fighting effort by MAGS’ Basketball Junior Premier Boys wasn’t enough to get past St Johns College (Hamilton), who won their final 75-63 tonight.

St Johns were up 15-13 at the first quarter and pulled away by 15 points after MAGS couldn’t capitalise on their chances. Sataan Tawera, for MAGS, led a strong attack to end the quarter at 34-23 to St Johns. At the  start of the third quarter Mags came out strong, scoring some great lay-ups, and narrowed the score to  54-49 by the end.

St Johns started the fourth quarter scoring seven points in the first two minutes, pouncing on the passing errors of MAGS. A time out helped to settle things down for MAGS  but St Johns did enough to maintain their advantage.

The MAGS team, under Coach Daryl Cartwright, have only come together over the past two weeks. They are a young team with only four year 10s, so the future of basketball is in good hands.
