Aquatic Academy

Overview

The Aquatic Academy was established in 2015 to provide an aquatics programme to students.

The programme will provide pathways for students who have chosen competitive swimming, as their sport of choice, and also provide additional aquatic fitness to students who require cardio based fitness training to supplement Triathlon, Water Polo, Canoe Polo, Surf Lifesaving and other aquatic based sports.

Located at Mt Albert Aquatic Centre, one of the finest indoor heated swimming pool and leisure complexes in the country; unequalled by any other school. There is a 25-metre competition pool and a large leisure pool as well as spas, sauna, hydro-slide, equipment shop and cafe.

Academy Objectives - Competitive Swimming

A programme that is innovative and challenging, enabling students to become champions regionally, nationally and provide a pathway into international competition. Build self-confidence, self-discipline, integrity and courage. Those students in competitive swimming are expected to participate in Zones, Champion of Champions, North Island Secondary School, New Zealand Secondary School and Auckland Swimming and Swimming New Zealand sanctioned meets.

Academy Expectations

All students must meet the following expectations

Represent the school at all nominated competitions/tournaments
Attend all required trainings
Adhere to school rules and ‘MAGS Way’
Act as a role model to other students and the wider community
Understand their placement in the academy may be withdrawn by the Academy Director, Dean, Director of Sport or Senior Management if concerns due to behaviour or academics
All academy fees are paid by due date.

Pathway

LevelNumbers
Junior Squad: Minimum training 3 per week. Entry level competent swimmers, new to competition. Focus on fundamentals of technique, stroke correction and goal setting. Swim meets entered as required.30
Intermediate Squad: Minimum training 5-6 per week. Introduction to psychology of sport, body conditioning, nutrition. Race plan awareness. Swim meets entered as required.30
Senior/Open Squad: Minimum 6 per week. Psychology of sport, body conditioning, race plan, nutrition, athlete awareness. Pathway to high performance, potential international scholarship. 30
