Two of MAGS’ most versatile sportspeople, Anne-Theresa Napara and Adam Gruebner, pictured above, were named Victrix Ludorum and Victor Ludorum respectively at the 2026 Sports Awards Dinner on October 28.
Anne-Theresa is one of the top netballers in the country, having been named in the NZ netball school team this year to compete against Australia U18. She is our Senior Girls Athletics Champion and a member of our medal-winning Premier Mixed Touch team.
Adam is part of the 1st XV Boys Rugby team, and was picked for the Auckland Blues U18 squad. He also played for the 1st XI Boys Cricket team that placed 2nd in the T20 Auckland tournament. He is part of the MAGS Sevens team that competed at Condors last year. Adam is the MAGS Boys Sprint Champion and was the anchor runner at the NZSS Athletics Champs to secure a national title in the senior mixed 4x100m relay.

The Tony Sail Cup, which recognises a team or individual that consistently performs at the highest level was won by Dylan Yare.
The Tony Sail Cup, which recognises a team or individual that consistently performs at the highest level was won by Dylan Yare, pictured left.
Dylan has been involved in MAGS Touch from 2022 through to 2026 and has been a stand out player from early on. Dylan played premier grade from Year 10. He became Captain of the Premier Mixed Touch team as a Year 11 student and continues to be the Captain. In the Auckland Secondary School Premier Mixed season, the team has won gold at champs in 2023, 2024 and 2025, taking silver in 2026. Dylan has been named Best Male Touch Player for three years consecutively, including this year. Last December, the Premier mixed touch team competed at NZ secondary school nationals where they achieved a bronze.
Our relentlessly successful Senior Boys Orienteering team, pictured below, won the Headmaster’s Cup for Team of the Year. The Boys team have won NZ Secondary Schools nationals for nine years consecutively and have taken the North Island Boys championship for 10 years. They are the current Auckland Boys top school and Auckland Boys relay champions, and have been for eight and seven years respectively.
The Te Aroha Keenan Cup (girls) and Olympic Cup (boys) for Outstanding Achievement were won by Aria Gardiner, below right, and Ted Rattray, below left, respectively.
Aria is Captain of the Premier Netball team that won the Auckland premier season, Combined points and UNISS and came runners-up at NZ secondary school nationals. She is co-captain of the U18 Waitakere team and the Aotearoa Maori representative team that won their respective national championships. She is part of the 2026 Netball NZ Schools team as a non-travelling reserve.
Ted has had an outstanding year for MAGS Rowing. He placed first in the U17 and U18 Single North Island Championships, and went onto the Maadi Cup to claim the bronze for the U18 single, and gold in the U17 single, setting a new course record of 7 mins 22s, and winning the school a single scull boat. He has represented Auckland at the North Island interprovincial regatta, and has been selected to trial for the NZ U19 team and is currently part of the Rowing NZ identification pathway.
The MAGS Service to Sport Cup was won by Lucas Cartwright, pictured below, a member of the Premier Boys Basketball team who suffered a season-ending injury at the beginning of this year but has supported his team through games and trainings and been on the sidelines supporting other MAGS teams and taking photos of these teams for the school newsletter, social media and website.
Even before he attended MAGS, Lucas asked if he could be a ball boy for the Rugby Boys 1st XV.
He has built a track record of leading by example and helping to lift teams, and that has continued despite his injury.
A highlight of the evening was a sports panel featuring Albertians who have represented NZ: Nikko Boxall (Football), Caleb Clarke (Rugby), Troy Garton (Boxing) and Maia Wilson (Netball).
Deputy Principal Mr Powell compered the panel, quizzing the guests about what playing sport at MAGS had meant to them, how sport had contributed to their wider lives and values, as well as the highs and lows of their careers and how they managed them.
