KBB Music Festival 2026

MAGS had three bands playing at the KBB Music Festival in mid-August, and all were recognised for their musicianship.
Our student music leaders report on the festival as follows:
“Our Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ms Cooper, worked hard throughout the entire year to prepare their selected pieces. Their hard work paid off, with a Highly Commended Award.
The Owairaka Jazz Ensemble, directed by Mr Melhuish, received a Bronze Award, recognising the efforts of everyone in the ensemble. The group worked hard, building progress over the course of the year.
“It was a great opportunity for both ensembles to perform alongside many talented groups and we’re very grateful to the teachers who helped make this happen.
“Our Magnaphonics band also marched its way to Parnell with a goal to disrupt the norm, and push new boundaries at KBB. We not only succeeded but the judges also invited the group back to perform at the Gala Evening on Saturday night.
“Despite the late notice the group pulled together to perform once more, with leadership from Mr Watson and Mr Melhuish.
The group was presented with a Silver Award and the Trevor Thwaite’s Command Performance Award.
“On Friday night, Niamh McDowall also played for the Honours Jazz Band, an all-star group that aims to perform at the highest standard. With only limited spots, this is an impressive feat, and Niamh represented the school with pride as the only MAGS student in the Honours Band.
“These are new levels of achievement for our Music Department, and a testament to the work of our teachers and students over the past couple of years.”
