At today’s Scholars Assembly, we again celebrated some outstanding results from last year’s Scholarship Exams.
Victor Coen, pictured right, who gained eight Scholarships with four at Outstanding level, will receive a Premier Award, putting him among the top 13 high school academics nationwide, while Khalen Quensell (Dance) and Leroy Stiven (Economics) have been named the top scholars in their subjects in New Zealand.
Ariana Kralicek, who gained five Scholarships with two at Outstanding level, was named an Outstanding Scholar (awarded to 57 students nationwide).
Victor gained Outstanding Scholarships in Accounting, Calculus, Chemistry and Physics, and additional Scholarships in Biology, Digital Technologies, Economics and Statistics. Ariana gained Outstanding Scholarships in History and English, and Scholarships in Biology, Geography and Media Studies.
The June Gray Scholarship, which is awarded to a female who has shown excellent academic results and leadership skills, was awarded to Sancy Prabhakar.
As well as Victor and Ariana, 11 other students will have their names written in gold on our Honours Board for gaining Scholarship (three or more Scholarships or two Scholarships at Outstanding level):  Campbell Buchanan (Scholarships in Chemistry, Physics, Calculus), Finn Hagen (Physics, Statistics, Calculus),  Yiqi Han (Chinese, Physics, Calculus), Benjamin Horton (Statistics, Accounting, Economics), Tamatea Jones (Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, History), Lucy Kennedy (English, Art History, Photography), Qiyue Li (Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, Agriculture and Horticulture, Statistics), Nora Peacher (English, Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, History), Ava Poynter (Chemistry, Physics, Statistics [O], Calculus, History), Parth Setiya (Chemistry, Physics, Calculus) and Leroy Stiven (Statistics, Economics [O], Calculus, Accounting).
In total, MAGS students gained 133 Scholarships with 12 of them at Outstanding level.
Guest speaker at the assembly, MC’ed by Head Prefect Brooke Lisipeki and Deputy Head Prefect Lucas Cartwright, was Jonathan Buckman, an Albertian (2012-16) who has returned to the School as an English teacher.
Mr Buckman, who was a top academic and won the prestigious Gold Lion while at MAGS, spoke about how students should remain open to opportunities and use the skills and values gained in studying for and sitting Scholarship as a springboard for their chosen careers or for career paths that they have not even considered yet.
