Coming up against Sacred Heart Hamilton, MAGS’ Hockey Girls 1st XI knew if they won they were playing for places 1-4; lose and they were playing for spots 5-8. Sacred Heart, a Waikato team with a number of rep players, were always going to be tough opponents but MAGS scored first, sparking the opposition into life. MAGS’ goalie Laura Polo played an absolute blinder, stopping a lot of shots but Sacred Heart got four past her for a final 4-1 result.

Today’s game was against Avondale College to make it into the 5th/6th final. MAGS scored first with Leanne Burton getting a final touch on a great ball into the circle from Maisy Simpson. The second half was tense, with end-to-end play. Avondale continued to press hard, and they scored to make the score 1-1.  The last ten minutes was a battle, with  MAGS scoring off a corner from  fullback Dhvani Mistry, who showed her talent at pulling out at penalty corners.  Avondale applied intense pressure in the final two minutes but MAGS held firm to win 2-1. Tomorrow they play Pakuranga College.
