Auckland Girls' Lacrosse Tournament: August 17, 2012.

On the Friday 17 August, the Mount Albert Grammar School A and B Lacrosse teams competed in the Auckland Secondary Schools' Lacrosse tournament at Avondale Race Course, competing in the 1st and 2nd divisions respectively.

The Premier girls didn't start the day in the best manner drawing with Diocesan School 1, 2 - 2 before moving on to beat Avondale College 3 - 0 and Pinehurst School 5 - 2.
With these results they finished 2nd in their pool, setting up a tough semifinal against top place qualifier Whangaparoa College.
After a tight match that came down to the final buzzer Mount Albert prevailed 3 -2. This put Mt Albert Grammar into the tournament final against Western Springs College.
The game was very close with no team managing to build a substantive lead during the first half with Mount Albert going into the second leading 2 - 1. Western Springs equalized after half time before MAGS struck back twice, sealing a 4 - 2 victory including an almost 50-metre goal from Morgan Puru.

Furthermore 12 girls from the A team were selected to represent Auckland, 11 at the U19 level and one at the U15 level which is an absolutely remarkable achievement considering there are only 10 on the field at a time!

In terms of Sunday, the first game the girls played was against Cambridge College from Hamilton, MAGS won 5 - 3. Next was Hamilton Girls which was won 7 - 1 by MAGS, thirdly was Avondale College another victory of 7 - 0. After which, the girls played Hillcrest High from Hamilton by a similar score The last game in the round robin was played against Diocesan School for Girls which Mt Albert narrowly won 2 - 1. Not akin to most other tournaments, the National Championship did not feature a semi-final system and went straight to a 1st v 2nd play off where Mt Albert played Diocesan again.
However, inspired perhaps by their last game as a team, Mt Albert dominated the game from the outset winning 9 - 0 to claim the NZ Championship title. Morgan Puru was named Tournament MVP and Olivia Hext was named Season MVP.

The B team didn't fare as well, finishing 8th in Division 2. However, four girls were selected to represent Auckland at the U15 level which bodes well for the future of Mount Albert Grammar Lacrosse.

All up, 16 girls were selected to represent Auckland, these girls are:
