The game started slowly for the MAGS team once again and is frustrating both the team management and players, however being able to play on the water turf meant the team settled and dominated the opposition in the opening ten minutes. Daniel Panchia scored a clinical field goal in the 12th minute but Marlborough Boys' College fought determinedly and came back with their own field goal in the 22nd minute. The MAGS team struggled to find their A game during the first half and although they showed glimpses of stringing passes together many shots into the circle could not find a waiting stick to guide the ball goal-ward - this was frustrating both players and coach.
Half time score: 1-1 Draw
The second half saw a very determined MAGS team take to the turf and try to take on the seemingly local Marlborough team who were well supported on the sideline. Co-captain Sye Jones scored the first field goal of the second half in the tenth minute but once again Marlborough came back after they were awarded a penalty corner in the 14th minute. Our defence easily shut down their drag flick specialist but the ball was not cleared and their second shot went into the back of the goal. The scores were once again locked. MAGS started to find their A game and started stringing passes together and between Daniel Panchia, Sye Jones, Cameron Cranston, Cameron Anderson, Troy Martin and Terry Gada gaps opened and passing was going stick-to-stick. The MAGS team scored three more times during the second half. Chris Bascombe scored a goal from wide on the circle at an acute angle that defied the laws of physics and the opposition goalkeeper. Daniel Panchia scored his second goal with a direct shot penalty corner strike on the ball that had the Marlborough defence simply watching the speed of the ball traveling into the goal. Jeremy Barnett who was on the post and slotted the ball into the back of the net in the 24th minute scored the final goal of the game. This was a far better game from the MAGS team and it was pleasing to see goals being scored at long last and the team playing with more confidence. The Player of the Match was awarded to Terry Gada who was initially up against the Marlborough captain who was at least five years older than him but he battled bravely and then switched wing forward positions and created space and played with vision during the second half. This was an excellent effort from a Year 9 student.
