Last
season MAGS won by 3 goals
in the Auckland
final
. However,
Saturday saw two new teams battling it out for staying 1st place
of the top 6. The first quarter was competitive with the game
swinging goal for goal. MAGS goal keeper Ashleigh Kelmon-Poto
made an impressive intercept and GS Tera-Maria Amani scored the
goal. MAGS finished the first quarter leading 10-8.
EGGS came out strong and scored the opening two goals drawing
level. MAGS responded with some great defensive pressure from the
whole team and methodical, controlled work on attack, scoring the
next four goals. Ashleigh Kelmon-Poto at GK and Y10 GD Jamie-Lee
Price started to increase the pressure in the circle, creating
errors from EGGS shooters and taking dominant intercepts. The
whole team were focussed and played with more
intensity and MAGS finished the quarter 20-12. EGGS continued to
challenge MAGS, especially from C Chonaire. However, MAGS were
still leading by seven, looking strong.
MAGS stayed in control to eventually win the game 34-26.
Overall, it was a squad performance from MAGS playing their whole
bench, putting out a new combination each quarter. MAGS coach
Paula Smith was pleased with the result. She said, "The game
today was about looking at different combinations and giving
young players experience in a pressure game. All of the girls
stepped up, but there is still work to do for our next game."
