Onehunga High School were no match for their near neighbours Mount Albert Grammar School in this Auckland Secondary Schools' Knock Out Cup competition fixture.
MAGS went
ahead in the first minute with the first goal of a Jordan Vale
'hat trick'. Surprisingly, it took them another 26 minutes
before the second goal arrived from a superb Nathan Atherton
volley from outside the penalty area.
It stayed 2-0 until half time when coach Kevin Fallon
introduced Faitalia Hamilton into the game and Matt Aleman
replaced Connor Stoton and Connor Lynch.
The goals came in quick succession after the interval, with
three in an eight-minute spell on the hour.
A big feature of the second half was the slick combinations
between midfield players Jordan Vale and Nathan Atherton. Twice
they combined on the edge of the box for Vale to finish and
achieve his second 'hat trick" this season.
After the game MAGS coach Kevin Fallon said, "It has been a
long time since we visited Onehunga and they have certainly
improved their playing surface and facilities. It was a good
training run for the boys and I managed to give fourteen
players a good work out."
Onehunga coach Ron Warbrick was philosophical about the
result, "It just shows our lads how far we have to improve to
compete with the top school teams."
The game was well controlled by referee Mr Neil Tobin.
