Boys - 1st XI - vs Auckland Grammar School - Wednesday 2 June, 2010

A slightly earlier start time of 5.40pm and playing on the newly refurbished Fuji Xerox turf at Auckland Grammar School for the first time this season did not help the MAGS team's opening seven minutes. Auckland Grammar enjoyed the home crowd vocal support and made the best of their early goal-scoring opportunities, scoring three field goals within the first seven minutes. The MAGS team was left with holes in the mid field because the forwards were not coming back in support and linking with the midfield. Once the team sorted out their linking between the lines of defence, they played well and kept their goal clean until the dying seconds of the first half when Auckland Grammar once again took advantage of a poor defensive clear of the ball and slotted a goal into the back of the net.

Half time score: 0-4 Auckland Grammar School

The second half was a far more even game and MAGS struck early in the half with Till Dorendorf carrying the ball forward from his right back position and between Dorendorf and Cameron Anderson, they worked the ball into the top of the circle. Anderson finished off a strong attack with an excellent reverse shot slipping the ball past the unsighted keeper into the back of the goal. Daniel Panchia and Sye Jones worked tirelessly at centre and right half and dominated the midfield, frustrating the Grammar team, who were unable to penetrate the defence until the 19th minute when they scored their final field goal of the game. The MAGS team was awarded the only penalty corner of the game in the 22nd minute and the keeper was able to stop the Panchia direct shot and clear the ball. The MAGS team pounced onto a poor clearance from the Grammar team and Jeremy Barnett made a strong run into the attacking circle, only to be taken out by the goalkeeper in his attempt at a shot on goal. The result was a penalty stroke being awarded and Daniel Panchia stepped up and converted the stroke in the 23rd minute. The MAGS team played well in the second half winning the half 2-1, however the result on the scoreboard at the end of the game was a 2-5 loss and reflected the poor start to the game, which is something the team needs to address before their next game against St Peter's College. Cameron Cranston was awarded the player of the match for his improved play since he was named in the team at the beginning of the season.
