Chatham Cup - Vs Birkenhead United: June 4, 2007.

"Historic Win for MAGS"

Sole Penalty seals the game.

Mount Albert Grammar School 1st X1 rewrote the history books today beating Northern Premier League team Birkenhead United 2 - 1 in the Chatham Cup at Alberton Avenue.

It was the first time MAGS have taken the scalp of a senior Premier League team.

MAGS gained confidence as the game progressed and wingers Malcolm MacRae and Pomare Te Anau started to torment their markers Sam Bailey and Ian Lathwood. In an even first half the 0 - 0 scoreline hid the quiet confidence of the schoolboy team.

In the 56th minute left back Skye Parmenter crossed to the near post and Birkenhead goalkeeper David Self gathered to thwart Milosh Nikolic's near post run.

Ten minutes later it was Skye Parmenter's pin point cross from a left-sided free kick that was squeezed in at the far post by skipper Ash Solly.

MAGS were 1 - 0 ahead and deservedly so.

Eleven minutes later Birkenhead equalised through Mikael Mundy who beat goalkeeper MaCrae Sloper to the cross ball.

Despite the setback MAGS were looking fitter and certainly more dominant. Their efforts were rewarded in the 80th minute when they were awarded a penalty.

Fifteen year old Zane Sole entertained the crowd with his penalty antics. It appeared to mesmerize goalkeeper David Self as Sole nonchantly stroked the ball past him.

MAGS played out the remaining ten minutes to finish as victors.

MAGS Coach Kevin Fallon said afterwards:

"Today was one of the proudest moments for me as a coach. It was a massive win."
