Hi! I am Van Huy Do and I am from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I
have been at Mount Albert Grammar for one year. It was such a
short time but I really enjoyed my time and I have improved a
lot. I still remember about the first month that I came to
MAGS. It was really hard for me because everything was new for
me such as new school, new friends and I could not speak
English properly or read an English book.
In the beginning I did not know what subjects to pick. I was
lucky because my dean, Mr Cole, and the Director, Mr Gray,
helped me a lot to figure my subjects out before school
started. They also gave me the opportunity to live in the
school boarding house.
I lived at the school boarding house for a year and that time
was just fantastic.
We had a lot of after school activities such as sport time.
This was also the time I could make friends with other house
boys. We also went to the beach for BBQ night, went Rainbow's
End and went to the warm pools. I enjoyed these a lot.
About school time, I see that MAGS teachers always worry about their students. For example my English teacher, I was in her Year 12 ESOL class and that was really hard for me because I could not even read an English book. My teacher then gave me the option to go to Year 11 ESOL because it would be easier for me to learn English. After changing classes to Year 11 ESOL, I passed all the achievement standards and got my literacy credits and now I am not afraid when I speak English. Not only do I feel confident when I speak English, but now I can communicate with everybody who speaks English.
I will never forget my time at MAGS. I lived at School House and made many friends. There were 100 boys. 100 New Zealand brothers that were like my big second family. I will never forget them.
Finally, I would like to say thank you to the teachers at MAGS that helped make this year such a great year. I will remember this experience for the rest of my life and I hope the future International Students will have as good of a time as I did.
