Cycling - 2011

Cycling Update - September 2011

The Mt Wellington Cycle 3 day event attracts the best riders from the schools involved in cycle racing. This year also included schools from all around the country, so the competition included many elite and even some semi-professional riders.

The events comprised of individual time trial, Individual Hill climb sprint, Criterium points race around a street circuit.

To put the results in perspective, last year not one of our riders completed the criterium races due to being dropped early in the races. This year, we were challenging for podium spots.

Over x3 events:

Under 15 Girls B: Samantha Brake 41st from 47 starters

Under 15 Boys B Laurence Kerby 5th, Finn Welsford-Ackroy 34th from 55 starters

Under 16 Boys B Tim Lund 4th, Joseph O'Gormon 6th, Jackson Hemi 12th, Thomas Kerby 26th from 33 starters

Under 17 Boys B Sean Pearce 13th, Guy Hirst 14th from 40 starters

Under 20 Boys Open Grad e Nick Bailey 39th from 64 starters

Next year, we will be very competitive in most grades. Laurence Kerby has another year at the under 15's, only having just turned 13. All riders are going to focus on the road racing outside of school, mainly for the Counties Manukau club as well as the school racing series and events. This summer we will also have at least 6 of the riders focusing on the track racing programme at the Manukau Velodrome.

Calling All Road Cyclists!

In the past two years, Competition Road Cycling at MAGS has grown from a sport struggling to make up a single team to enter the Auckland Secondary Schools' Cycling Team Time Trail to the point where we may be entering four teams in 2011.

However, we want to grow cycling at the school, even more so if you are interested in getting into a fast-growing, exciting, fun sport. Why not come along and get involved?

We have a full programme planned for 2011, including both Auckland and National competitions that cater for all skill levels.

MAGS Cycling meets every Monday evening at the New Lynn Velodrome on Portage Road (just over the railway line) at 5.00pm, so come along and get involved.

Alternatively, you could speak to Mr. Long, Director of Sport, or Mr. Watkinson who will able to give you more information.
