Also attending this tournament were Shekynah Clarke (Reserve NZ) and Lavinia Lousi with the Pacific Rim Team. The Pacific Challenge Team contained Natahlya Va'ai, Tayla-Rose Wesche and Luseane Lousi. Also chosen were Meretini Fuimaono and Chiara Semple for the Aotearoa Maori Squad.

Under 15 Girls - Singapore December 2012

Final - Game 7 vs Hunter All Stars (Australia)
Lost: 23-24

After a valiant effort our girls went down fighting to the end 23-24. Four points down with two minutes to go. 6-7 down in 1st, poor 2nd quarter saw us loose 3-7, drew the 3rd 6-6, won the last 9-3. Captain fantastic Semira was injected into game and had immediate impact. We may have lost the final, but Elle Temu was named most valuable shooter and Te Ao Frandi most valuable mid-courter. A fabulous end to the campaign, well done girls!.

Semi-Final - Game 6 vs Bukit Jalil
Won: 45-2

Our team worked hard in this game, with all players getting court time. The feature was the way in which this team has gelled and the combinations developed. Their earlier game v Bukit Jahal was a very physical affair but today they took them out of the game by playing clinical netball beating them 45-23. The final is re-match from last year's. We play Hunters All Stars from NSW which is a mix of Newcastle girls & other players from region.

Quarter-Final - Game 5 vs. Aquinas:
Our Under 15 girls are now in the semi-final due to their win over Melville by 53-11. Rai was rested for this match. Year 9's lead the team in the first half, supported by some Year 10's. TeUranga was playing Goal Keeper, Kasey Goal Defence, Felicity Wing Defence, France Center, Leilani Wing Attack, Kayla Goal Attack and Elle at Goal Shoot. Score for the first quarter was 15-3, second quarter 13-3, third quarter 14-3 and final quarter 11-2. Awesome statistics!

Game 4 vs. Singapore 1:
This was a comprehensive win for MAGS with a final score of 51-27. Shooting statistics were Elle 37/40 = 93%, Kayla 12/17 = 71% and Leilani 2/3 = 67%. Rai was off due to injury. The girls wanted to earn MANA (play with pride), and they did.

A very confident display of netball. Disciplined and on attack with flair. The team seems to be growing in confidence and it is great to see the young ones stepping up and starting matches.

Game 3 vs. Melville (Australia):
Another win for MAGS with a final score of 34-20. Kasey was rested due to a sore knee. TeUranga played a full game at Goal Defence and developed heaps. This game for the team was really tough physically, creating a great learning experience.

Game 2 vs. Bulkit Jakal:
MAGS won 41-24. Once again, all 12 girls had time on the court, either by playing half a game or three quarters.

Coaches asked for the team to concentrate on the basics. Once that was achieved some very skillful netball was seen. Leilani shot 93%, Elle 80% and Kayla 80%. Our shooters are slotting the goals when they get the ball. France linked well with the defence, making some good runs through court and re-offering around the circle edge.

In the third quarter Kayla settled in well and TeUranga put good pressure on the Goal Shooter from Bulkit, who was 6ft tall! Felicity worked tirelessly at Wing Defence, running down their attack and bringing the ball through court. In the fourth quarter, the girls got their first taste of the physical nature of international competition.

We lost Captain Semira Van der Made in this game due to a suspected fractured ankle. It was a bruising contest and one which they will definitely reflect on and take with them into their Trans-Tasman clash against the Aussies tomorrow.

Game 1 vs. Rustenberg:
MAGS started with a win against Rustenburg, with a final score of 49-17. Score for the first quarter was 11-2, second quarter 13-6, third quarter 12-6 and final quarter 13-2. The team displayed more confidence as the game went on. Defence was tight and attack played with flair. The next game is 7pm our time. Team is looking great so far and have all had time on court.

2012 National Secondary Schools Championships Timaru

From start to finish, the 13 players that travelled to Timaru were focused on the job ahead of them. MAGS started the week with impressive results and continued this through to the final.

Our theme for our successful UNISS campaign was Together we are One. Going into NZSS, we wanted to look at the product we wanted to put out on court and ensure we developed other tactics and skills we could use. For NZSS our girls brain-stormed and came up with a formula based on the on the song Girls on Fire= Drive + Skills + Heart, a great fit for this team. This song rocked out on the drive before every game.

Captain Erikana Pederson lead her team on and off court, supported by stellar performances from all the players. Co-Coach Paula Smith said, "It is hard to single out one individual, as it was a total team effort with all girls participating with accuracy and full commitment. This group of players are very special and it's a joy to see their hard work rewarded with such an emphatic display of netball."

The results speak for themselves as to how they played all week. All players got court time and stayed true to their theme by playing exciting netball.

vs Westlake Girls 46-20 win vs Marlborough Girls 65-14 win
vs St Mary's Girls 47-23 win vs Craighead 51-25 win
vs Avondale 39-21win vs Baradene 39-26 win
Final vs Tu Toa 43-24 win

A complete domination of secondary school netball saw Mount Albert Grammar win the Grand Final against Tu Toa 43-24.

In Timaru in 2009 the same two teams took to the court in the final of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Netball Championship, but this time the result was reversed with Mount Albert Grammar proving themselves as Number 1. Last year we were beaten by one point, a result that haunted us, but drove us on.

From the first whistle, you could tell these two teams had a history and, despite the score-line, the game was anything but boring. With bodies on the line and fellow NZ Secondary School representatives playing against each other, the netball displayed was that of flair, skill, pride and determination.

Mount Albert Grammar Goal Attack Meretini Fuimaono led the charge for her team in the opening minutes, confidently slotting goals from anywhere in the goal circle, despite the rangy arms and exceptional elevation of Tu Toa Goal Defence Kayla Williams.

Captain Erikana Pedersen's combination with Centre Nadia Loveday had to be the strongest in the competition. The two players worked tirelessly and seamlessly together, looking down court to holding shooters Chiara Semple (1 st half) and Maia Wilson (2 nd half) at every opportunity.

Down the other end of the court Jamie-Lee Price and Holly Fowler stifled the movement of the usually dynamic Tu Toa shooting duo of Shaani Temata Frost (GA ) and Emma May Murray-Fifita (GS), forcing them to shoot from afar and claiming any rebounds. Wing Defence Destiny Grace was that extra cog in the Mount Albert Grammar wheel that made the defensive line-up impenetrable, confusing the space and setting up many intercepts for herself and team mates.

Tu Toa had moments of brilliance, but these were short-lived and stifled by the Mount Albert players. Tu Toa couldn't quite find the secret to stopping our momentum. Though only eight players played in the final, the whole group had a part to play in the achievement of the team.

Below is the last verse of a poem written by Erikana Pedersen, Shekynah Clarke and Alanis Toia which sums it all up the MAGS Pride they took out on court for this game.

These will be our last 40 minutes left

So, give it your best and never rest

Those blue and yellow colours will be soaring

The last words I leave you with...

"THROUGH HARDSHIP TO GLORY"

The stats were better than the Ferns results all week with the last centre pass conversion rate at 91%, shooting stats 88%. Coaches could not have asked for a more disciplined display. Awesome girls!

"The game does not build character, it reveals it. This team have been masters of their own destiny, the product they put out there was second to none." said co-coach TeAroha Keenan

Four players were selected in the tournament team Nadia Loveday, Erikana Pedersen, Meretini Fuimaono and Holly Fowler.

Six players have been invited to the NZSS camp in December, Shekynah Clarke, Jamie-Lee Price, Meretini Fuimaono, Chiara Semple, Holly Fowler and Maia Wilson. This will hold us in good stead for 2013.

Premier Netball UNISS 2012 Tournament

Day One (Monday 2nd September):

In the first game we started slowly but once we got going we were able to get good flow through court and players impressed with their turn overs achieved and the transition from defence to attack. All 12 players took the court and showed good links and ball speed in all facets of play.

We won the game v Bethlehem College 52-14.

The second game was always going to be a hard one, a rematch of the Auckland Secondary Schools Final. In that game we won by 7 goals, today we were very focused and beat Baradene College 46-32. Ten players took the court in this game and saw our defence end challenged by the height of Kathleen Solia from Baradene. However we saw a strong mid-court performance from Erikana Pedersen and Nadia Loveday which saw good ball to our shooters and tightened the defence to secure a good win.

Day Two (Tuesday 3rd September):

Hillcrest High School offered little resistence with a 52-16. This was a good opportunity to rest our main line players.

St Kentigans College was a game we thought would challenge us but the team comfortably secured a 43-21 win seeing all 12 players getting court time.

Day Three (Wednesday 5th September):

St Pauls College from Cambridge was a school that had been playing well, unbeaten going into our match up we were both in the top 16 teams and were now in the cross overs. We tried different combinations to start to look at what strength we had within our junior players. It was a strong start for us in the game and Alanis Toia and Maia Wilson both year 10 stood up and played beyond their experience at this level. All 12 players were able to get on court and we finished the match 55-16.

Our second game of the day was against Cambridge High School a top six team from 2011. They came out strong and we once again we started different combinations which took time to settle. The challenge was getting past their 6ft 2 goal keeper. Both Chiara Semple and Maia Wilson coped well sharing the duties with Meretini Fuimaono. Once we got our flow they also succumbed and we finished the match 40-19.

Day Four (Thursday 4th September):

Auckland Girls Grammar School game saw Mags have a slower start but once again we took a commanding lead by halftime, AGGS are depleted from last year with the loss of their yr 13 players and we capitilised on their inexperience. Mags were once again able to make many changes to the line up. We were now in the top 8 teams and playing off for top 4, we won this match 49-20.

Avondale College and Mags were undefeated and this match was going to be a hard one. It was close all the way through the 1st quarter but mags started to pull away in the second quarter to eventually win 37-20. The scoreline was not an indication of the intensity of the match. This took both teams into the top four.

Day Five ( Friday 5th September):

With the coaching staff still wanting more work from each player to achieve that complete performance we set some high goals for the Semi-final match versus Trident High School from Whakatane. We understood that our two hardest matches v Baradene and Avondale were in the other semi-final and both were wanting to improve their game to get to the final. Trident were the outsiders who had performed well all tournament. This game was the most focused our girls had

Jamie-Lee Price, Holly Fowler and Meretini Fuimaono

been in any start. They dominated from the first whistle and finished winners 51-13. It was then that we knew they would be primed for the final.

The Semi-Final between Baradene v Avondale went into extra time and Avondale finished the game ahead. Our preparation for the FINAL v Avondale College was to just focus on what we wanted to see on court and make sure it was done well. The game was tight for the first quarter until we forced Avondale into errors and took ball defensively to be ahead at half-time. The second half saw us assert our dominance throughout the court and saw us eventual winners by 45-20.

It was an awesome week. We had Nadia Loveday, Shekynah Clarke, Chiara Semple and Meretini Fuimaono names in the top 10 players from A Grade. And they were also named in the top 20 players for the tournament with Jamie-lee Price, Holly Fowler and Maia Wilson. Nadia Loveday was named player of the tournament. This week sets us up well for NZSS in October.

Premier League Matches - 2012

Final vs Baradene College - August 22nd
Won 37-30

The whole occasion was a huge spectacle as Baradene and MAGS supporters came out in force and provided great support for their teams throughout the match. MAGS Premiers started quickly, going 4-0 ahead, showing good combination work from their attack. Baradene adjusted and started to put MAGS under more pressure by playing tight on and causing turn overs, gradually levelling the score. Meretini Fuimaono at GA made some strong and quick drives into the circle to open up space for GS Chiara Semple. With the MAGS shooters struggling to convert opportunities and Baradene scoring theirs, MAGS finished 11-9 ahead at the end of the first quarter. With Rebekah Roache out injured and Nadia Loveday away in Australia with the NZU21's, the mid court was a little lighter and forced changes in the second quarter with Jamie-Lee Price to WD and Destiny Grace into centre.

This change had an immediate impact, with MAGS scoring the first four goals. Our shooters settled in and took control of the circle. Shekynah Clarke at GK worked hard to create intercepts against a tall target at GS, Kathleen Solia for Baradene. Destiny and Erikana Pedersen combined well on attack, linking through court. At half time, we had pulled out to a nine-goal lead 21-12. Alanis Toia came on at GA in the second half. These changes took some time to settle. The usual links were being challenged by Baradene and our play became erratic. Baradene applied the pressure, taking their opportunities. Holly Fowler came up with some crucial intercepts for her team to keep them ahead by three heading into the last quarter. The final quarter for MAGS needed to be solid and the team combinations became more settled, MAGS steadied the attack and pulled further ahead. Again, it was the defensive display from Holly Fowler that gave MAGS the edge. Deflecting shots, taking rebounds and working tirelessly with Jamie-Lee in the circle.

Alanis Toia started to find her range and linked well with Chiara. Captain Erikana Pederson showed leadership and discipline playing her first full game on court guiding her team through to the final whistle. Baradene came to play, but could not keep up with the pace of MAGS. MAGS stretched out the score to win by seven goals, 37-30.

This is the fourth year in a row that the MAGS Premier Netball team has won this title. They have won every Auckland competition game and add this trophy to the College Netball trophy won in July. Now they can look to the Upper North Island Championships and defending their title for the sixth year. Coaches Paula Smith and TeAroha Keenan know there is much to work on in the upcoming 2 weeks as they fine tune their combinations.

Semi-Final vs Epsom Girls - August 18th
Won 55-14

Intensity, clinical finishing and relentless work on attack and defence sums up the MAGS Premier Netball team in this semi-final. It was a strong display of flair and precision netball at times. Epsom Girls had no answer to any of the combinations MAGS put out on court today. All 11 players showed commitment to the game plan and saw it through to the final whistle.

We wish Nadia Loveday safe travels and good luck as she sets off to Melbourne with the NZ U21 team, so will miss the final.
MAGS will play Baradene on Wednesday evening in the Auckland Secondary Schools Final, time TBC.

vs Epsom Girls - Wednesday 15th August
Won 40-25

It was a slow start from the Premier girls. MAGS started with a new shooting combination of Alanis Toia and Meretini Fuimoano. Erikana Pederson and Nadia Loveday connected well and brought the ball through court at speed. Half time MAGS were ahead and moved into top gear during the third quarter. Destiny Grace was relentless on attack and defense. Jamie-Lee Price and Shekynah Clarke consolidated their circle defensive work with some quick switches and ability to get ball. Chiara Semple came on in the second half and provided MAGS with a different option. Raipoia made her Premier debut at Wing Attack.

MAGS face Epsom Girls in the semi-final on Saturday 18th August.

vs St Kentigern College - Saturday 11 August

From the first whistle MAGS played with speed and clinical finishing from both shooters, St Kents were left stunned. MAGS continued to work a variety of combinations including Sophie Ribton, Ashi Ponini, Jamie Sowter, Year 9 students Elle Temu and France Bloomfield. It was a great display of the depth coming through at MAGS. With all these changes made MAGS still won by 21 goals. Final quarter scores 13-7,11-7,14-4,6-5, final score 44-23.

vs Baradene College - Tuesday 7 August

Top of the table. Neither team had lost a game.

MAGS new it would be a tough game but they started off strongly in the first quarter. Erikana Pederson took the court for the first time in nearly a year. She looked comfortable and happy to be back. Shekynah Clarke at GK picked off intercepts from Baradene's key goal shooter. This was aided by some tight defensive pressure through the mid-court. Chiara Semple at Goal Shoot took control of the circle and converted from range. In the second quarter Baradene tightened up defensively and started to come back at MAGS. At half time MAGS re-grouped and came out firing putting the game out of Baradenes reach. Unfortunately Captain Rebekah Roache suffered an injury that saw her removed from the court. Destiny Grace stepped up at Wing Attack. Nadia Loveday continued to dominate at Centre and with Jamie-Lee Price and Holly Fowler backing her up Baradene had no answer in the final quarter. MAGS finished the game winning in the quarters 12-6, 9-8, 15-7, 7-3 for a final score 43-26.

Premier Netball v McAuley High School - Saturday 4th August

With Raewyn Henry (wife of Graeme) as the new McAuley coach, this game was billed as a biggie in netball terms. McAuley is fifth on the table.

We started the game with the strong line up of Chiara Semple, Meretini Fuimaono, Nadia Loveday, Destiny Grace, Jamie-Lee Price, Holly Fowler and Shekynah Clarke. They also had strength in their team.

We are still working on team links, especially into the attack end. It was pleasing to see what we had worked on at training being applied on court. McAuley proved to be spirited and challenged us in the attack end. As with other games, changes were made throughout. Rebekah Roache came on at half time, as did Alanis Toia.

As our combinations become stronger, we are setting clear goals for each match.

The game started with our starting lineup combining well and the first quarter ended with MAGS 15-4 ahead. With our game plan focused on set plays and retaining possession on attack, and setting our defensive game plan to take ball, AGGS reshuffled their line and came out strong in the second quarter. It took us too long to adjust to their speed and accuracy. This quarter ended with MAGS winning by only 2 points. In the third quarter, we regained our rhythm and once again won the quarter convincingly. The final quarter was unsettled, as we adjusted to changes. The final score was 48-28. Although there was a 20 point difference, we feel we still have much to work on.

MAGS Premiers v King's - 9 June, 2012:

The first game was the first time in a while that Kings gained relegation to the Premier grade, this game was long anticipated and appropriately was held at Mags to celebrate our schools 90th Jubilee. All team members played and really was a one sided affair but great to kick start our build up to Uniss in September.

Our second competition game was also against newly relegated Avondale College, with NZSS player Faamu Ross in the line up we were wary of her defensive skills. The team got into the grove very early and showed some nice touches especially into the shooting circle.

Once on top however our players showed real class ending the game with a 34 point margin. This will send shock waves to future opposition.

College Netball Championship - 2012

College Netball is back to entertain you with week-on-week exciting ANZ Championship curtain raisers, which started on 1st April 2012.

In its second year, the competition now boasts eighteen teams vying for that elusive top spot in a knock out format which sees some of New Zealand's great secondary school rivalries take to the court.

The eighteen teams will be grouped into three zones with the winner from each (and the second-placed upper North team) coming together for semi-finals, leading into the Grand Final on the 1st of July 2012.

11 games will be televised on SKY Sport who will also be producing a highlights package.

Round 1: MAGS vs St Kentigern's won 39-12

A slow start from the team, but once MAGS got into their rhythm they pulled away to be convincing winners. Rebekah Roache was named player of the match.

Round 2: vs Hamilton Girls' - won 32-17

MAGS were three goals down at quarter time. They re-grouped at the break and worked hard and applied more pressure to Hamilton Girls'. Holly Fowler was strong on defence in the circle making some good intercepts. It was not their best display of netball, but managed to get through the game and come out winners. Chiara Semple was named player of the match

Semi-Final: vs Craighead Diocesan - won 26-21

Craighead came out strong in the first quarter and made MAGS pay for their mistakes. With MAGS 4-8 down after the first quarter they needed a more consistent performance. Changes were made with Maia Wilson coming on at Goal Shooter, Nadia Loveday moving to Wing Defence and Rebekah Roache coming into Centre. This created more defensive pressure with MAGS winning the 2nd Quarter 7-3. The game was all tied up and half time. MAGS continued to capitalise on Craighead's mistakes and convert possession. In the last quarter, Alanis Toia came on at Wing Attack and made some good passes into the shooters. Meretini Fuimoano was moved into Goal Attack. This change had an immediate impact.

Rebekah Roache was named player of the match.

This was a hard fought win by MAGS and they moved into the final

Final: vs Tu Toa

MAGS started strongly and pulled away quickly to become 4-0 ahead. They started off being patient on attack and converting intercepts from Holly Fowler & Nadia Loveday to finish the quarter ahead 9-3.

Tu Toa made some changes and MAGS took time to adjust, but were still leading 16-13 at half time. MAGS brought on Maia Wilson at GS and moved Jamie-Lee Price to GD and Holly Fowler to GK. This change unsettled the opposition, with Jamie-Lee and Rebekah Roache making some amazing intercepts.

Captain Roache lifted the intensity of her team, leading by six heading into the last quarter. Maia Wilson held strong at GS, with Meretini connecting with WA Loveday to open up space in the circle.

MAGS finished strongly winning 38-26. There is still work to be done, but the team had a confident start and worked tirelessly to finish strongly and become the first National College Netball Champions.

Once again our teams dominated this tournament. It shows the huge depth we have in our junior ranks. Standout performances during the day from the year 10 was Kayla Kiss in the shooting end and in defence Semira Van der made, Felicity TeAhuru-Kakahi and Taunten King. Ms Absolum made numerous changes and this did not stop their flow at any stage of the games.

The year 9 team enjoyed the opportunity to bond as a group and try different combinations. They were just as dominant. Consistent performances from TeUranga Royal in defence and Leilani Folau and Latisha Isaako in attack was pleasing to see.

Opposition coaches and parents came up after games to commend the girls on their skills and sportsmanship on the court. The players received drink bottles, netballs and netball bag as prizes.

Students Selected to High Performance Squads - 2012

Congratulations to the following MAGS students who were named in the Auckland Netball and Waitakere Netball High Performance Squads. The girls will participate in a six-week programme working to develop elite fitness and netball skills.

A special mention to Rebekah Roache and Erikana Pedersen who have made the regional Auckland Waitakare Senior High Performance Squad. Also in the squad are MAGS old girls Tera-Maria Amani, Darrell Leota, Tuaine Keenan, Mei Ling Refiti and Lavinia Vaitohi.
