Tradition and Change

Mount Albert Grammar School
Founded 1922

Mount Albert Grammar School was founded as a Government boys' secondary school in 1922. In the year 2000 girls were admitted for the first time and it is now a fully co-educational school, with a total roll of 2300 boys and girls. Boys and girls are taught in separate classes in Year 9 and 10 and in largely mixed classes in Years 11, 12 and 13.

It is a school of spirit, pride and tradition, emphasising academic achievement, within a caring and supportive environment. It has the distinction of ISO 9001 certification for its systems, and the School is located in large, spacious grounds in central suburban Auckland. Mount Albert Grammar School aims to be the best secondary school in New Zealand.

There are fine permanent buildings including the classical, original 1922 buildings, now strengthened and improved. Facilities include a pleasant landscaped environment, computer centres (all students have free access to e-mail and internet), an extended state-of-the-art library, two large gymnasia and fitness centres, squash courts, playing fields and astrograss tennis/netball courts.

It has a fine aquatic centre on campus, with two heated indoor swimming pools - a 25-metre competition pool with variable depth, and a leisure pool with wave action and a water slide. Two spa pools, a steam room, a sauna, a pool shop and a food outlet complete the complex.

The School has a farm on campus; young people from all over the Auckland region are able to visit this unique facility. Our students are able to study farm-related subjects as part of their courses.

The School has had a very popular boys' boarding hostel School House on campus for 75 years.
