Orienteering - 2010

Auckland SS Rogaine Orienteering Championships - 26 August, 2010

Rogaine is the sport of long distance cross country navigation and is also a backronym for "Rugged Outdoor Group Activity Involving Navigation and Endurance".

Teams of two visit as many checkpoints as possible in the 90 minutes allowed. These checkpoints have different values depending on the level of difficulty in reaching them and they may be visited in any order with the winning team accumulating the highest points. Teamwork, endurance, strategy and route selection are all elements of Rogaining.

This year's Championships were held at Shakespear Regional Park, Whangaparaoa and MAGS was represented by seven teams. Matthew Milner & Matthew Russell were first in the Senior Boys & Kieran Woods & Matthew Battley won the Intermediate Boys.

Other results were:

4th Rosalie Sinclair & Jennifer Dunkley Senior Girls
7th Oliver Brooks & Sam Nicholson Intermediate Boys
10th Fraser Bourne & Liam Robertson Intermediate Boys
11th Don Wu & Robbie Harrison Intermediate Boys
12th Jared Wilson & Caderyn Alsweiler Intermediate Boys

There were some outstanding top ten results over the three days of competition and the boys competing did extremely well to place 6th out of 31 schools in the "Top School Competition". This is the longest running competition, with boys & girls divisions, and it is intended that the trophies go to schools that display the greatest depth of orienteering talent at all levels.

AKSS Individual Championships: 18 May, 2010

AKSS Team Relay Championships: 28 April, 2010

This year, six teams represented MAGS at the Auckland Secondary Schools Orienteering Relay Championships held at Ambury Regional Park, Mangere.

Our Senior Boys team of Kieran Woods, Matthew Russell & Matthew Milner were 2nd, only one minute behind the winners.

Other results were:

6th Holly Dixon, Molly Swanson & Natalie McNulty

Intermediate Boys
8th Robert Harrison, Oliver Brooks, Don Wu

Unfortunately the other two Intermediate Boys' teams (Liam Robertson, Fraser Bourne & Daniel Hay / Caederyn Alsweiler, Jarrod Wilson & Sam Nicholson) did not record times as a mispunch (which means missing a control or going to the wrong one) occurred.

North Island SS Championships, 16-17 April, 2010

Kieran Woods & Matthew Battley travelled to Waitarere Beach, Manawatu for the North Island Secondary School Orienteering Championships.

The individual competition was run over sand-dunes on farmland. Both Kieran and Matthew ran well in the Intermediate Boys division which had the largest number of starters in the competition.
