  • NZ Nationals - Ohope Beach - March 2010

Audrey Bourneville, Claudia Goff and former student Chantelle Gorecki all rowed this last summer for the Piha Colada's Under 21 Women's surf boat crew, as a brand new crew. With no one having any prior experience at rowing, the first year was going to be testing for all, but the girls worked extremely hard and competed to the NZ Nationals at Ohope beach mid March.

The goal was to try and get them into one of the two finals they would contest after a number of heat races to qualify. After dipping out by a whisker at the Short Course final,  the girls worked extremely hard to make the Long Course final (the harder of the two races to qualify for!) Beyond all expectations, the girls pulled everything together to finish a very close second place in the NZ National Under 21 Women's final. As you can imagine with girls, the tears of joy were flowing and this result was probably the highlight for the Piha Boaties (who also won several other national titles). The girls' result helped the Piha Surf boats win the Club Champions award for the third successive year!

The girls obviously have to be patrolling members of Piha Volunteer life guard service over the summer months to be able to row in the surf boat crews.

  • Surf Life Saving NZ Championships: March 16,17, 2008

Cedric Bourneville & Ludo Bourneville are both part of the Piha Pistols Under 19 NZ Champion Surf boat crew, along with fellow rowers Shamus O'Halloran and Jed Wright. The boat is swept by their father Mark Bourneville.

When you think that this crew has three members who can again row at under 19 level for another two seasons they have performed at a unprecedented level.

The first time ever that an Under 19 crew has rowed at the Under 21 level at the NZ Champs and grabbed a well respected placing from the bigger and heavier under 21 crews ( 2nd ), the crew have worked tirelessly all season, rowing up to sometimes four times a week. Coming from Piha, they had a big wave reputation to uphold and had plenty of practice in the big Piha surf. The crew has also undertaken a fair amount of weight & gym work to supplement their in-the-boat work.

The boys are already planning on next season's assault which will kick off in Nov 2008 .

The all-conquering crew have had a total of 24 carnivals raced this season with 19 first placings.

    The season highlights were :

Auckland Champions : 1st Short course and 1st Long Course
North Island Champions : 1st At under 21 level
Young Guns Australia : 4th place in Final ( 80 crews at this Comp, Aussies best )
Trillian Trust Series : 2nd Place overall, racing against under 21 crews
Piha Big Wave Champions : 1st Under 19 Crew
NZ Title under 21 SLSNZ Champs : 2nd Short course
