Pasifika Awards Evening 2012
The first MAGS Pasifika Award Evening was held on the 25th October 2012 in our school hall. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students and their parents to acknowledge the academic and sporting success of our top Pasifika students at MAGS. Nick Bakulich, our guest speaker, also reinforced that, as Pasifika we need to be involved, whether it be from a parenting angle, students focussing on academic success or simply playing our part in the local community.

Pasifika Committee
The MAGS Pasifika committee have organized and run our activities for Pasifika Initiatives for 2012. They have established Pasifika assemblies each term, run Parents evenings and organized mentors to speak to our students. The biggest commitment has been to our Homework Centre, where our seniors have mentored junior students and tutors from our staff and the University of Auckland have come in on a Thursday afternoon and helped our students for two hours at a time.
The members of our committee for 2012 are:
Jahkeisha Annandale, Charlotte Unasa, Keana Sua, Veronique, Penelope Tonga, Shannon Leota, Seiafi Sapolu, Rebekah Roache, Erikana Pedersen, Keneti Ah Kuoi, Sitaua Magalo, Llaryzza Vaai, Claire Patolo, Braydon Kulatea, Jaedyn Taimalietane, Solomone Falaniko, Zachary Tui, Atah Cocker, Sariah Clayton, Cory Yandall, Simanu Sapolu, , Siu Ofonoa, Mikayla Napaa, Trent Ah Ken and Tavita Tavita.
Two Pasifika Head Boys
Keneti Ah Kuoi Atmore met with the 1982 Head Prefect, Rev Fa'afouina V. Solomona BA, BD, DipGrad DipMin, Minister of the First Samoan Congregational Christian Church in San Diego, California USA.
He was vice-captain of the 1982 First XV, a team that won the Auckland Championship and then went on to win the New Zealand Championship (for the first time). He was also in the First XI cricket team.
30 years later Reverend Solomona proudly revisits where it all started for him.
Pasifika Assemblies
The Pasifika committee organized two assemblies for our MAGS Pasifika students to help encourage them to achieve academic success that reflects their true ability and potential.
Michael Jones was inspirational in emphasizing that anything is possible when you want it badly enough and that every student can live the dream. However, he stresses that they must be prepared to sacrifice their time and prioritise what is important "Walk the Talk".
Mosa'ati Mafileo
Mosa'ati is the recipient of the runner-up award for the Queen's Jubilee Commonwealth Song Competition. He composed and wrote the original lyrics for "Song for the Queen". The judges and guests from the High British Commission have compared his voice to Elton John's, and Mrs. Moon was very proud to be there on Tuesday 13 March, and to receive the award of $750 for the Music Department.
Mosa was awarded a certificate and spent some time talking to the Lord Mayor of London and the High British Commissioner. When Vicki Tredell asked him if there is anything she could do to encourage the young talent in New Zealand, Mosa has invited her to visit Mount Albert Grammar School. He is a true young ambassador for our school and we are all very proud of his success.
Success for David Tuipuloto
On Saturday 26 May, David Tuipulotu flew to Christchurch to compete in the 5th "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for secondary students. He was placed first and his prize is an all-expenses paid study trip to Beijing for two weeks in November after completing his NCEA Level 3 examinations.
David is also a head librarian and a member of the school orchestra and choir. More...
Pasifika Parents Evening - Thursday 8th March 2012
Pasifika Initiatives is a MAGS programme that focuses on raising academic achievement for our students . At our first meeting of the year our guest speaker was Judge Ida Malosi. Seira Su'e, who gained Excellence for Levels 1, 2 and 3, also spoke; she is now in her first year of Law. We briefly covered NCEA, with Pasifika university students on site to answer questions students might have about how to be successful and tertiary courses.
